Nicole Sylvester

Nicole Sylvester is an award-winning filmmaker, producer, and educator known for creating bold, emotionally rich stories rooted in authenticity, identity, and resilience.

Her debut feature film, Maya & Her Lover, marked her arrival as a writer-director with a distinct voice. The film premiered at American Black Film Festival and went on to win Best Director at the Harlem International Film Festival and Best Feature at the Detroit Trinity International Film Festival.

Nicole’s journey began in Detroit as a producer/director for local cable television, where she earned a national Cable ACE Award nomination and a Cable ICE Award win before transitioning into independent film. Her early short films, The Stop and Minor Blues, established her as a rising voice in Detroit’s indie scene and earned her multiple Public Benefit Corporation film grants. She later served on the Detroit Film Center Board of Directors, where she also taught filmmaking workshops and mentored emerging filmmakers.

Her global footprint expanded with The Owner, a groundbreaking collaborative feature made with 25 filmmakers from 13 countries, earning a Guinness World Record for “Most Directors on an International Film.” Nicole also produced the award-winning features Blood Bound and Cargo—the latter shot entirely in the Bahamas and recipient of several awards including the Amnesty International Human Rights Prize at the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival, Best Diaspora Film at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival, and Best Film at the Haiti International Film Festival.

She later produced the critically acclaimed documentary Fast Dreams, which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and served as a producer on The Nugget, a podcast that received the 2023 Communicator Award of Excellence.

Drawing from years of experience as a production coordinator for major studios and networks—including Sony Pictures, Starz, and Amazon Studios—Nicole bridges the worlds of independent and studio filmmaking with a unique insider’s perspective. Her expertise in production management, creative development, and micro-budget filmmaking has made her a trusted voice for filmmakers seeking practical pathways into the industry.

Nicole is a proud member of the Producers Guild of America, New York Women in Film & Television, Women Independent Producers, Film Fatales, and Alliance of Women Directors. Currently based in Brooklyn, Nicole is developing a slate of television and feature film projects while continuing her mission to equip emerging filmmakers with the real-world knowledge and confidence to make their movies—via her micro-budget moviemaking masterclass.
