Kavery Kaul

Kavery Kaul is an award-winning director-producer-writer whose films boundlessly straddle many worlds. From brain injury to vibrant music and art to compelling coming of age stories, Kavery’s array of subjects introduces viewers to people they may never have met. Working in the US and internationally, Kavery brings to her projects an understanding of the challenges of both.

Her documentaries have been featured at major festivals including DOC NYC, Telluride, London, and Sydney, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), Jameel Arts Centre (Dubai), and American Center (India). The Bengali won the International Humanitarian Award at the Rhode Island Film Festival and the Special Jury Award at the Roxbury Film Festival. Cuban Canvas was an Imagen Award Nominee, Margaret Mead Film Festival Selection, and Mystic Film Festival Best Short Film Award winner. Long Way from Home was a Film Threat and Time Out Critic’s Pick. The Academy Film Archives and the Women’s Film Preservation Fund restored One Hand Don’t Clap for theatrical re-release. The Academy-restored Wild at Art enjoyed extended runs at major museums, including MoMA PS1, the Walker Art Center, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

As the India-born founder of riverfilms and a frequent guest speaker, Kavery’s documentaries have reached broad audiences worldwide in theaters, television, and all media. They have been shown to thought leaders from the International Brain Injury Association to Girls Inc. Kavery has taught filmmaking at Columbia University and City College. She is a Fulbright Senior Fellow and a recipient of the New York City Proclamation of Excellence. Her highly acclaimed TEDx Talk speaks to the power of storytelling. As an arts speaker on Fulbright’s 75th Anniversary, she reminded us that “Stories Matter”.
